Based in Dublin, Simon specializes in media law and acts for creatives concerning their rights and advice regarding the exploitation of royalties and rights. Simon has an extensive background over 20 years pro-actively advising a diverse group of media clients in the corporate sphere. He is an accredited mediator and believes that rather than engage in costly litigation it is in the client’s best interests to achieve the best solutions for them by finding mediated or arbitrated settlements.

He is best known for his work for Brendan O'Carroll and Mrs Brown's Boys and the protection of intellectual property rights regarding this brand throughout the world. He began acting for Brendan O’Carroll in September 2001 and has been his personal solicitor exclusively ever since. He is part of the production on for the BAFTA award-winning BBC TV series Mrs Brown’s Boys and provides legal advice to the production BOC Pix. This includes for all stage shows, DVD, merchandising and Ireland’s most successful ever feature film Mrs Browns Boys D’Movie.

 

Experience.


Extensive experience as a practising solicitor and mediator, particularly in litigation having qualified in 1998, and being made a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in 2002.

Represented BOC-Flix in the production of Mrs Brown’s Boys-D’Movie, shepherding Legal Teams in the UK and Ireland, active involvement in the Section 481 process, liaising with Banks, Producers, Investors and all related parties, and dealing with issues of production such as contracts and unions and negotiating finance and production contracts and all Intellectual Property issues that arise.  Simon is now involved in the negotiation and pre-production of Mrs Brown’s Boys-D’Sequel, which will have the largest budget ever for a UK-Ireland co-production.

Simon has also led legal teams in both Ireland and the United Kingdom regarding commercial disputes, defamation actions and privacy/data protection claims.

Simon has also been published in National Daily Newspapers, has spoken on Issues such as Freedom of Expression and is often asked to comment by the Media on matters about Media and Entertainment Law.

Law Society of Ireland

A member of the Data Protection and Intellectual Property Committee of the Law Society of Ireland. This  committee is tasked with considering developments in data protection and intellectual property and related cutting-edge legal issues and advising the legal profession on such matters as well as being the public face of the legal profession in Ireland for data protection and intellectual property issues.

Irish Government

Simon has consulted with the Irish Government regarding the introduction of legislation about the protection of consumers in the event of above cost selling of tickets for live events including sports events and was instrumental in the drafting of the eventual legislation and was involved in the shepherding of the legislation through the Irish Legislature.

Brand Management

Simon is an expert in brand management and has been involved in the early stages of negotiation with the implementing and executing of contracts with the BBC, NBC Universal, Britbox and Netflix. 

Production

Simon is credited as a member of the Production Team for the TV series Mrs Browns Boys and was the associate producer of the much-acclaimed BBC documentary Brendan O’Carroll: 1916: Family at War.

Simon has qualifications in the law of cybersecurity (Harvard 2020). This, coupled with his mediation expertise, has been useful with negotiations regarding various cyber blackmails. Simon has advised in respect to cybersecurity and cybersecurity breaches, and has also lectured on this topic and the topic of artificial intelligence and the law.
